Terms of use
Effective date (last updated): 2026-10-30
Lanternfair is operated by Digital Scavenger LLC (North Carolina, USA; "we"). These terms are an agreement between you and us. By signing up for or using the service, you agree to these terms and confirm you have read our Privacy notice.
What the service is
For entertainment and self-reflection. Readings follow traditional BaZi rules; they are not predictions or professional advice. We do not offer rituals, charms or luck-changing services. Readings are not a substitute for medical, mental-health, legal, financial or other professional advice. For important decisions, weigh the real situation and the views of people close to you.
Age and your account
- You must be 18 or older to use the service.
- Give truthful information. Your account is for you alone.
- If you haven't linked an email, you may not be able to recover your account on a new device, after clearing your browser data, or after a year (sign-in sessions last at most a year).
Your birth details
Enter only your own birth details. In a comparison, the other person enters their own.
Invites and comparisons
- Invite only people you know who want to take part.
- Partner mode is for mutual reference between people who both agree. It must not be used for hiring, firing, promotion or performance reviews.
- Nicknames may not contain phone numbers, emails or social handles. Do not harass, threaten or impersonate anyone.
Acceptable use
You may not: access, scrape or copy the site with automated tools; break, interfere with or get around the site's security, regional limits or payment flow; use readings commercially (for example, reselling them or charging others for readings); or use the service to break the law or infringe anyone's rights.
Content and intellectual property
The site's text, readings, images, software and the Lanternfair name belong to us or our licensors. The classical source texts are in the public domain; our translations, interpretations and arrangement of them are ours. You may use your readings for personal, non-commercial purposes and share your cards and links in the ways the site provides. Your nickname is shown to people you compare with and to anyone who opens an invite or gift link you send, and it appears on cards you share; the default nickname we assign includes the element of your Day Master, and you can change it in Settings. If you send us suggestions, we may use them freely without paying you.
Regions
Available features differ by country and region, and the service is not available in some places. Please state where you live truthfully. You may not use the service if you are in a country or region subject to comprehensive US sanctions, or are on a US sanctions list.
Payments
All features are currently free. If we add paid content, we will state the price and refund terms before you buy.
Disclaimer
Except for rights under consumer laws that can't be excluded (such as the guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law), the service is provided as is. To the extent the law allows, we make no promises, express or implied, that it is accurate, always available or fit for a particular purpose, and we are not responsible for decisions made on the basis of a reading, or their results.
Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows: we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive losses; and our total liability to you is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before your claim and US$50. This does not limit liability that the law does not allow to be limited or excluded, such as liability for fraud or gross negligence.
Your consumer rights
Nothing in these terms affects rights you have under the consumer laws where you live that cannot be excluded by contract. For example, in Australia our services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law.
Ending use
You can delete your data at any time in Settings. Accounts with no visit for 2 years are deleted automatically, including any purchased reports. We may suspend or remove accounts that break these terms; in that case unused two-person reports and gifts not yet accepted are refunded, and so are reports already opened, except in cases of fraud or abuse (or where the law says otherwise). We may change, suspend or stop features. If we stop offering a paid report before the end of the year it covers, we will tell you on the site at least 30 days in advance so you can print it or save it as a PDF, and purchases made in the 90 days before it stops can be refunded in full on request.
Disputes
If you have a problem, please email us first; we will try to resolve it within 30 days. Either of us may bring a claim in small claims court where you live. Otherwise, disputes go to the state courts of Wake County, North Carolina, or the US District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, without affecting any right your local law gives you to bring a claim where you live.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of North Carolina, USA. This does not affect mandatory consumer protections where you live.
Other terms
- If any part of these terms is found invalid, the rest still applies. If we don't enforce one of our rights straight away, we haven't given it up.
- These terms and the Privacy notice are the whole agreement between you and us about the service.
- You may not transfer your rights or obligations under these terms; we may transfer ours as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of the business.
- These terms are published in English and Chinese (the Simplified Chinese text controls; the Traditional Chinese version is converted automatically from it). If the English and Chinese differ, the meaning more favourable to you applies.
Changes
We will announce important changes on the site at least 14 days before they take effect, and update the date above. Changes don't affect purchases you completed before them. If you keep using the service after new terms take effect, you accept them.
